Maytag LAT2500AAE not agitating

My 24 year old top loader recently started having problems agitating, the agitator itself is secure to the transmission shaft, that was the first thing I checked.

I manually pushed down on the agitator while rotating it at the same time and managed to get the shaft in mesh with whatever it's supposed to be driven with, it agitated fine thereafter for just one load, how much longer it will agitate is anyone's guess.

In the attached video at 00:06 the entire agitator raises or "pops" up, you'll also hear knocking sounds as agitation continues.

Is there some sort of retainer securing the shaft within the transmission? Does it involve transmission removal and disassembly?

You don't need to remove the transmission but you do need to get the agitator off without pulling the agitator shaft up through the stem seal/agitator shaft seal.  There should be a 1/4" screw in the side of the agitator, when that screw is backed out the agitator should slide off easily on these models of this washer.

After the agitator is off you have to remove the spin basket and the tub mounting stem/seal kit to replace the agitator shaft retainer.

Thanks so very much!

I knew that the day would come when this uber reliable machine would need major repairs, guess that day is here now.

Parts for it, notably the timer have long ago become obsolete for it, used timers are available, however it's a gamble as to how long it may last, as it is now the timer motor makes a slight buzzing noise.

Additionally, the outer wash tub has developed pinhole rust holes which, so far I've been able to patch, this, along with the fact that a decent timer being unavailable is sealing this machine's doom.

In preparation for the Maytag's demise I bought a used Speed Queen,  product code TV2000WN top loader a year or so ago of which I am in the process of sanitizing, it is, I suppose the "daddy" of the present day TC5, the only new washing machine worth consideration.

Alas, the sole SQ dealer here in Hawaii wants $1800 for a new TC5, a bit more than I am willing to spend...
