Stuck water filter in Whirlpool gsf26c4exb02

As the title implies, I have a Whirlpool gold refrigerator (model gsf26c4exbo2) with a stuck water filter.  The filter was the wrong size for the unit and was jammed into the compartment.  It's not budging.  I can think of no way to grab ahold of the filter since it is inside the housing of the liner.  My thought was to remove the plastic covering around the filter housing but I have not found a video illustrating how it comes apart.  I haven't found an exploded diagram that has been helpful. Does anyone have experience with this?  If so, I'd appreciate your advice and suggestions.  the serial number of hr10949473 if that helps date the unit.

Thanks,

JPL

This particular housing is very common to get filters stuck. I use a thin 90degree pick to at least get the filter out.  Once you disassemble the housing, you will likely find that either something plastic has snapped out of place, or something has cracked and the housing needs to be replaced.  Normally the housing pushes the filter out when you open the filter door but the assembly breaks very easily.

When I put these back together, I use a large zip tie to hold the assembly in place. Hard to explain but you'll see what I mean once taken apart.

Thanks.  Got it done.  On my model there was a gap on the top of the housing that allowed a small screwdriver to be inserted so the filter could be pushed from within the housing.  Back in business.

Yes, but there is still something broken if you have to use a screwdriver.    Normally the door/latch mechanism pushes the filter down and out,   but if you are OK with using a screwdriver from now on, there's nothing wrong with doing so!
