795 Kenmore door flipper defrost broken wires?

Kenmore with Linear compressor

Does the defroster in the door flipper need to be connected or will the entire fridge defrost cycle be affected?

My wires were broken so I decided to disconnect the plug. Now I am getting no cooling after 36 or so hours leading me to believe it has affected the entire system. Is there any truth to this?
