My washer has recently gotten very noisy during the spin cycle. There isn't a specific strange noise it's making, it's just much louder than it was historically. It happens with every load so I don't think it's a load balance/level issue.  I suspect it's the drum bearings but thought it would be wise to check with you guys that have so much more knowledge and experience!

thank you!

Chris

Need to replace bearing & drive shaft kit if it’s noisy on spin cycle.

So I ordered that replacement kit above and have put it all back together but the shaft does not want to turn easily. It seems to be related to the seal at the top. If I don't have the seal in, I can turn the shaft by hand. I filled the seal with grease and coated the outside edge with silicon and set it down in but now I can't really turn the shaft.

thoughts??

Thank you!

Try backing the nut off a little. It does not have to be super tight.

Ok.....so now I've got it all replaced but now I'm getting an "overload" error.  I've heard that its commonly because the basket isn't "floating" but it sounds like thats generally a result of rust and corrosion on the shaft....but this is a brand new shaft.  Could it be that I have something too tight?

Thanks again!

So I'm pretty sure it has to do with the agitation cycle.  The tub fills with water ok but during the agitation phase is when I get the "OL" error code.  If I switch it to a drain and spin setting, it will spin just fine.

Help!

Thanks!

@clattin sounds like the basket isn't floating correctly to release the basket cog so that basket can stay in one place as the agitator plate moves back and forth.

After it fills with water and tries to start agitating - pause it and see if you can move the agitator without the basket turning and hold the agitator still and see if the basket will rotate by hand.

How did the inner bushing on the spin basket look when you pulled it apart?

No, I can't turn the agitator independently or the basket.  Is the "inner bushing" the tube that goes on the shaft between the bearings?  If so, it seemed fine....minimal corrosion on it.

So its clearly a basket floating issue.  How do I resolve that?

The tube between the bearings is a crush sleeve to keep the bearings at the correct spacing.

The tub bushing is the bushing in the spin basket that slides down onto the new shaft you installed.

When you dropped the spin basket back into the machine after you replaced the bearings, did it slide easily down onto the new shaft or did you have to force it down?

If you had to force it down the that is your problem - the spin basket should slide easily up/down the main new drive shaft that you installed.

Just to make sure you're clear on the spin basket and the agitator being able to move each on their own without moving the opposite, (basket or agitator), you would have to let it fill with water and try to start agitating and get the error.  The water has to be filled to make the spin basket float up, if it drains the water out before you can unlock/open the lid the you won't be able to check this - TUB NEEDS TO BE FULL OF WATER TO CHECK IF SPIN BASKET FLOATS UP AND DISENGAGES THE COG WHEEL IN THE TOP OF THE SPIN BASKET.

I ran it yesterday in the diagnostic mode and it failed at the C6 stage which I believe is the agitation stage. The water was just over the top of the agitator and I could not spin either the basket or the agitator independently.

I don't recall having any trouble sliding the basket down on the new shaft but I'll put the basket today and inspect that bushing. Is that a replaceable part? Or do I just need put a grease in it?

thanks so much for the great info!

Got it working! Thank you for all the help!!

I pulled the basket again and used a little sandpaper on the bushings and then put a thin layer of marine grease in there and now everything is perfect!

thanks again!

I don't think it's really a good idea to grease this - the bushing and shaft is submerged in water and you could get a film of grease on the water surface thus transferred to clothing.

Cleaning the spin basket bushing with emory cloth and cleaning it good along with the new shaft it should slide on the shaft correctly.
