Can anyone help?  My 21 year old washer was making noise when it agitated, which I ignored. However, when the timer progressed but at end of cycle, the soapy wash water still up to top, with fabric softener still there, I called repairman.
The only glaring problem he found was one missing brake. He replaced all brakes. He said belt was fine, and transmission seemed fine. He thought that possibly when my sink didn’t drain one time, it caused the washer tub not to spin…but that sink issue was fixed. (I did ask if drain hose could be plugged, but he didn’t think so.)
Anyway. The first time I used machine after the new brake replacement, it worked.
Second time? Again, timer advanced to end of cycle, but soapy water still in wash tub - and fabric softener still in place…so I’m thinking the timer moved, but actual machine stopped when it was supposed to spin for rinse. Back to square one, but at least no noisy agitation after brakes replaced.
I love this machine and don’t like new models. I do think the repairman I used was knowledgeable. I’ve already spent hundreds on this repair. While I don’t want to spend more than a new quality washing machine would cost, I’d like to fix this machine.
Oh! The machine will spin/drain if I push the timer button in and manually advance to spin and pull button to start spin. I could just limp along doing that, but if there is a reasonable fix, I’d rather fix it, because it’s a great machine.
BTW. I wasn’t completely sure new brakes would fix it, but at least I knew that was one definite problem.              Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

you are very lucky that machine ran this long ,  it was a design flawed machine out of the box , most didn't last much over 5 years . count your blessings and get you a new washer

they did function great when they were working , but should not have put big money into this machine,  this was the washer that put the final  nail in maytags coffin , then they had to sell to whirlpool or file for bankruptcy because of the sav's

Ha! Of COURSE I understand that this machine is old. Had there been a comparable machine other than possibly Speed Queen, I would not have spent any money to fix it. But now that I’m half way into this, I was hoping that some knowledgeable person might have an idea about why - if transmission, belt and lid lock working, what the issue could possibly be? I hear the lid lock click, so I assume it’s working. Could the belt look good but really isn’t strong enough? If I could tear this thing apart myself, I would!  Now it’s the principle of the thing…I want to solve the mystery!
