Good Day. I have a 5 year old GE GTW680BMM0DG washer that leaks when agitating. It does not leak when sitting full or when draining. I was lead to believe that this indicated a failed tub seal, so I disassembled the washer down to the inner tub to "gently pry out the seal with two screwdrivers" only to find the thing won't budge. After looking at diagrams of the unit and calling replacement part suppliers, it would seem the seal is part of the gearcase and is not available as a separate part. Spending almost $400 for a new gearcase seems kind of excessive to fix a failed seal. I am wondering if there is a retrofit seal available, or if I'm hooked and need to spend half the price of a new machine on a 5 year old washer that saw use usually once a week.

Thank you.

It went to the great washing machine gig in the sky. What a piece of junk. Every review on this pile was 1 star or less.  If the allies had had a fleet of them during the war they could have coordinated the spin cycles and frightened the Luftwaffe back across the channel.

One guy had a picture of his that had self destructed during the spin cycle and took out a couple of walls of drywall.

I was close to paying 2k for a maytag commercial unit but I'll probably be selling the house before the replacement packs it in, so I couldn't justify the extra.

wow I was saying drop the tranny to get the seals out... shouldn't have been a big deal

On some of these GE's it's not so easy.  Sometimes it's impossible to separate the basket from the transmission.

And the transmission needs to be replaced to replace the seal - It comes as a complete assembly with the seal.  The seal going out also usually means the upper transmission bearing is out, (it for sure is in this case from the description).

The only correct repair would be to replace the complete transmission, this one doesn't look like the ones that are almost impossible to separate the spin basket from the transmission.
