GE Cooktop, Model# JGP645WEX1WW

I looked at a GE gas cooktop where the LR burner is sparking but not igniting. It will ignite with a match and the spark is slow and white. All other burners ignite right away so I do not think there is a polarity issue.

I would like to get below the surface to look at the igniter, switch, and spark module. Having said that, this particular model, #JGP645WEX1WW, has a vent fan attached to the back that electronically rises when actuated by a knob located on the cooktop. I believe this is a high dollar unit and I am afraid the glass could break if only one person attempts the removal.

My main question is whether this is a one man job or are 2 people needed to safely remove the cooktop. If it is a one man job, is there a manual out there that gives step by step instructions on removing the cooktop?

Any thoughts?

Do all four burners spark at the same time? If so the spark module is working. Try cleaning the spark gap at the malfunctioning burner. I use a stainless steel brush to clean the parts up. Also make sure the burner is grounded properly to the shell.

Here's the diagram for that cooktop.

Remove all the burner heads and the switch retaining nuts.  You'll need to work around the perimeter with your putty knife to break it free.  Some of these older ones had clips in the front that you had to push in.  Not sure if this is that way.

Once the glass is clear, it's easily a one-man job to remove it.
