Condensation Leak - 40 year old Maytag refrigerator/freezer

Recommended Posts

About two years ago I found water in the bottom of my residential refrigerator that leaked about a half cup of water out on the kitchen floor.  I called a good local appliance mechanic, and he said after checking all visible hose and tubing connections, that it was condensation forming in the freezer that was eventually leaking down the inside rear wall of the freezer onto the bottom and then out to the floor.   He could not find anything amiss.  At that time, it was only happening once every two or three months.  It is now happening two times a week.  About a year ago I turned the thermostat to the lowest setting, but the problem has not gone away.  Could this be a problem that cannot be determined unless the case is opened?  Is the refrigerator on its last legs?  Temp in freezer is 0 and refrigerator is 40 .

Note:  I have a residential Maytag washer, A107A, that is indestructible.  If it ever dies, It will be from assassination, not old age.  The thing is tough.  I did have an item that failed, so I called the same repairman lmentioned above, and he had the correct replacement in his truck.  10 minute fix.  He said that if he found one of these washers on the side of the road, he would rehabilitate it and keep it for himself.

Make sure the condensate drain (defrost drain) isn't clogged up and that the defrost water isn't just backing up and running out of the freezer compartment.  Also, make sure the defrost drain pan under the unit isn't cracked and leaking. You can pour some water into the pan and observe for leaks onto the floor. If the drain and pan check out ok then it is possible there is a crack in the plastic liner near the drain area inside that is letting water infiltrate into the liner and/or that the insulation has just become saturated over time and the build up is leaking down in-between the liner and cabinet. If the liner is cracked, you can try to seal it with some silicone caulking but if it's just a moisture build up in the insulation, then there's not much you can do in that instance. You can't really "open" the cabinet unless you just start hacking away at it but not sure what you'd accomplish anyway by doing that.
