I have a Maytag Atlantis/Neptune look alike m#mav5000aww. The problem is that it will not spin. I checked the belt and the pully, motor and pump all are spining but the basket will not move. I checked the lid switch -ok.  The noise is a loud clanking noise I suspect the bearing but is it the lower one or upper one. Any ideas would help. Thank you -Ken:dude:

I'd yank the belt off and try to turn the drive pulley by hand (agitate &spin) see how it reacts in spin (turn but not move or not move at all) then pull the brake assembly......(possibly something between the tubs?)

(edited after Scott's reply) when you turn the pulley by hand it will rotate and you can feel it raise up  and release, to spin the tub.. these are a weak link never understood why they would want to put a plastic pulley and helix on there to drive15-18 gal of water and 20-25 pounds of wet clothes....

More than likely you need a new  Thrust Bearing Kit,  part # 12002213, which consists of a new transmission pulley, washers, and a new E-clip.  When the washers and the thrust bearing wear out, the cams do not rise to release the spring loaded brake, and thus the washer won't spin.  I will let the Samauri try to explain it to you how to replace this part.
