Best horizontal-axis washers? Best dryers?

Whose horizontal-axis washers do we like best for durability, sensible engineering and ease of service? I get the impression Maytag Neptunes aren't well liked...what's a good one to pick? Which ones don't create feelings of dread on service calls?

Same question goes for gas dryers.

Thanks, all...

The most rugged and easily serviceable is the Staber washer.  But I know you're in Canada and Staber won't ship to Canada.  :(

I spoke to the Staber people, and they do ship to Canada. They even have two distributors up here (one in BC, and one in ...ummmm....Alberta, was it? Or maybe New Brunswick?). But, I'm not certain the Staber is going to be the best choice for our needs, especially given the extra cost and difficulty of obtaining it. It's probably going to wind up being a Duet/Epic or an LG. Last-minute tiebreaker advice on which to pick?

Duet....

Forget the LG, They are too hard to get anybody to service them and they may have a direct drive motor, but I don't care for them.

Like Pegi said, buy the Whirlpool Duet.

OK, it's gonna be a Whirlpool Duet, either under that name or the Maytag Epic name (having done three different lines of research, I am about 99% certain they are both actually Whirlpool Duets being sold under two names).

Yes, the Maytag Epic is really a Whirlpool Duet.

As I heard, Lowe's does not sell Maytag brand products (smart move for Lowe's the past few years) and Home Depot doesn't sell Whirlpool stuff. This goes back a long way. Slapping the Maytag label on everything means more metal moving via the Orange route. Gotta keep Clyde and Marion,OH bustling.

Keep in mind, the Duet Sport is made in Mexico and isn't the same machine as the Duet.

Lowes still sells some of the Maytag built units including the MAH5500, 6500 & 7500 which as they are made today, I will put up against any other front loader out there for serviceability and reliability (would never of said it about the 3 & 4000)).  I think just about everyone on here will side with the Duet over just about any other Front Loader.  Also, the Duet is made in Mexico (not just the Sport) and Germany now. Both Lowes and Home Depot sell a full line of Whirlpool and Maytag branded products down here and I thought that was nationwide as well.
