Kenmore HE3 gas dryer 110.92822101

  Hi,

How do I diagnose why my gas dryer sometimes heats up and sometimes only the ignitor glows for 10 secs. then goes out without heating up.

I read the oracle of gas dryer repair and the description is what happens when it doesn't light, but sometimes it lights!

How can I tell if it is the gas valve coils or the ignitor not getting hot enough?

Also, how can I get into the Xdrive files to retrieve repair manuals?

Thanks

A common problem is the glow ignitor gets hot and turns orange, you hear a click, but no flame and then the ignitor goes out. This is almost always the gas valve coils, an inexpensive part that's easy to change. Don't mess around with just changing one of them, save yourself a headache and change out the set. You won't be out a lot of shekels. Buy the set here.

Coils, coils, coils. Or a loose connection somewhere.

He's right....Coils. They are cheap and if that doesn't fix it you can always do something more serious to it. 90% of the time its the coil set. Actually its probably more like 95% of the time. Thats why I carry two sets of them in my car and no gas valves.

Thanks, I'll change the coils out - I check the resistance and all the values are in the neighborhood but out of the range specified in the manual. That may explain my intermittant heating.

It looks like I have to take a few things apart to get the coils out. Are there other parts in the area I can test electrically to determine if they need to be replaced as well before I order the parts?  I saw a description of how to test he radiant sensor.  How about the ignitor, or anything else there?

Thanks!

I've seen a few flame senors where the rivets attaching the terminals to the bakelite block/bimetal fatigue and eventually lose contact. Easy to test by a firm shake. Whatever you do, don't touch the glowing part of the ignitor, even if it's cold. The tiny bit of oil from your fingers wil render it short-lived. They are more fragile than glass. You can ohm it out but the only real test for an ignitor is under an actual load.

OK - next question - how to change the coils.  I've attached a photo of what I'm looking at.  Do I go for the plate that is screwed to the top of the gas valve?  Is there a screw above the coils that I can't see, I and don't know if I can get to? It looks like the gas inlet pipe goes through a hole in the bracket that holds the valve.

Is it possible to remove the whole heater assembly to get access?  Where would you recommend I start?

Thanks for all your help.

There is a metal plate which holds the coils down. I think it has two screws in it. Remove it and replace the coils one at a time. Make sure you don't mix-up the old ones with the new ones. Then put the plate back on and try it out.

Thanks,

Just two philips screws on the top, easy to remove with a stubby driver!
