GE Gas Cooktop - Downdraft Fan Runs When LR or LF Igniter Switches Are On, Model# JGP389WEVWW

I'm working on a GE gas cook top, model #JGP389WEVWW, that has the following problem. The downdraft fan automatically comes on everytime the left front or left rear burner switches are turned on. The fan does not come on if either right switch is engaged.

It would seem to me that it can't be the burner switches because the fan comes on if either switch is used. Additionally, the wiring diagram appears to show the left switches running through a relay to the fan motor but I am not sure if the relay should be considered. What does the relay do? Also, the diagram lists the following switches, RR, RF, LR, LF, ULF, ULR. I am not sure what the "U" designates. Does anyone know?

Anyone have any ideas what might cause the fan to come on?

Thanks,

Steve

Sounds like the relay is definitely involved. Can you post the schematic? Check the basics: good ground, good incoming voltage and proper polarity.

I'm not sure, but think the ULF/ULR is refering to the bbq grill burner that is an optional surface module kit: WB28X5040 Grill Burner CLICK HERE to see

Maybe the "U" is in reference to the burner shape????

I'm not sure if the BBQ grill burner is only for use in the left side or not. There is a mircoswitch that only shows on the parts breakdown on the left side that I believe is suppose to be activated only when the BBQ grill burner is installed, which I believe is to make the fan come on at all times if you're using the grill. Maybe this switch is stuck closed or out of adjustment so that even the regular burner activates it?

CLICK HERE to see your parts breakdown and note reference #208 microswitch. The relay also could be your problem, it may have contacts to the fan welded together, (I don't know if the relay is for the fan or not, but most likely is).
