Frigidaire test question

You are at a service call for a relatively new machine when an irate customer says, "Why did this machine fail already? Are they having problems with these things"? How would you handle this situation as a representative of Electrolux?

-- Offer them a soothing back rub and a beer?

The amp draw of the igniter muct match the amp value of the gas valve, if the igniter is weak, not drawing the posted amps it will not open the gas valve.  The igniter stays on after the gas valve has opened to keep it open, this is a classic weak igniter problem.  Verify this by checking the amp draw of the igniter when it is glowing and see if it matches the amp draw posted on the side of the gas valve.  This system is nothing like the gas dryers..

Sure is irritating when the original question is changed to something that is not remotely close to what the post has been changed to...please do not do this, it makes the replys look foolish and not related in any way to the question...here is what was posted that I replied to.

This is a question from the Frigidaire servicer test. I think it is either a flawed question or a trick question:

"The oven on a freestanding gas range will not light. The top surface burners work properly and the service technician has checked the oven glow igniter and says it is glowing brightly. What other test is necessary to verify that the igniter is good?"

If the igniter is glowing, isn't that a pretty good indication that the igniter is good? An igniter is either going to glow or not glow, ie: much like a heating element, it either works or it doesn't.

What am I missing with this question?

Thanks Pegi! I put a more intersting test question in the original post.

Sorry Pegi, you were to fast, I thought the irate customer question would be better!

My answer is don't take the Electrolux test. You don't want to be trying to work on Frigidaire stuff under warranty.

Frigidaire is so cheap that they don't have a 1-800 number for most things.

Frigidaire is so cheap that if you want them to send you a check as payment for a warranty job, they charge you for doing it.

My advice, stay away from Electrolux and Frigidaire.

The Warranty work is not profitable but you can learn what jobs to avoid. It's also a good foot in the door, you know you will be back if they need service again. The ESA work can be very profitable depending on how cheap you can get your parts, I always take those jobs. The best part is no authorization required.

1-888-842-3660 seems to work for just about everything I need them for. I find their Tech support is generally excellent. I especially find Eugene in cooking products to be especially helpful and knowledgeable and Greg and Tom in Laundry really know their stuff as well.

I'd rather have an EFT through ServiceBench, saves me a trip to the bank and is available immediately.

To each their own.

i tell customer it broke because its a machine, and they can break, and as for are they having problems with them.. no more so than any other machine made by human hands, the best person on there best day can make a mistake, its human nature, and thats why you have a warranty

as far as frigidaire service contracts, the last owner of our company retired a millionaire and sold it after only 8 years with only frigidaire as a warranty contract. they allow you to bill for one call on each serial number for "no fault found" which alot of others do not, and they do have a 1800 for authorized servicers that is very helpfull and short hold times

also that 1-800 # will answer your questions for serial numbers even after they are off warranty

i know when i tell "the man" to take his job and shove it and go on my own i'm goin after a frigidaire contract,  oh and refusing calls on these damn LG POS dishwashers

Good thoughts everyone, and appreciated to. At this point just starting out part time, I'll take whatever I can get so I'm not overly concerned with maximizing profit just yet. At some point in the future when I go full time, I'll have to do a cost benefit analysis of doing work for various companies. Tonight I ran my first ever service call, and yes, it was for a buddy of mine. The hot water side of his washer's (early 90's WP direct drive that he bought used for 50 bucks a year ago) fill valve was hopelessly clogged. This guy had been filling buckets with hot water from his kitchen sink to pour into his washer for loads he wanted to wash in something other than cold water. Said it took him upwards of 10 trips to get enough hot water and that he'd been doing this for six months.

ok, if it was a buddy i would have had to point out the fact that he has a hose attached to a hot water tap that unscrews from the machine and carries hot water alot quicker than a pail  :P
