Maytag MDC5100AWW: Hooting pump & rack tines

Got a Maytag MDC5100AWW that works very well, with two exceptions

1) The pump (I am supposing) sometimes emits a "hooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot" sound that lasts all or part of any given cycle. It does not seem to depend on the brand or amount of detergent powder used. Our water isn't hard.  If this were an automotive water pump, I'd be tempted to run a bottle of water pump lube through the system, but it's not.

2) The racks' plastic coating seems unusually delicate. I've owned many dishwashers, of which several have been Maytags, and never been able to scratch off the plastic with a thumbnail as I can on this one. I can't peel it off in sheets or anything, but it is too easy to scratch off. Is this a known issue with these racks, or am I just "lucky"?

The racks had or have at least a 5 year warranty against rust, not sure how old yours is because there was no serial.  There was no real problem with the rack's durability.  They were not as tough as the higher end Jennair and Maytag stainless steel tub racks (Dark Gray in color and 10 year warranty) but certainly no problems.  The moaning or whining noise is usually the face of your seal rubbing on the bottom of the impeller.  If it only happens when the sump is drained out and the pump slows down to change direction into a wash it is normal and changing the impeller kit will only make it go away a short time if any.  If it is singing as it is washing or during the majority of the drain, replacing the seal kit listed below should solve it.

Thanks, good info. Serial number is 29283534EA; I'm not exactly sure when it was made, but perhaps this number will let you tell me.

Seal kit: Going to requisition one now so I have it when I need it.

Service manual...?

You use the last two letters of the serial number to determine the age.  Prefix EA indicates it was made January of 2004 so those racks are probably still covered.  I do not see a service manual on Service Matters for this unit.  I have one for this series, it just will not cover the portable features.  All else will be the same.  I tried entering it on service matters to see if I could bring it up that way.  No dice.  If you need a certain section, let me know.

Thanks for the info on the serial/date code.

How big is that service manual? If it's not too cumbersome, could I trouble you for the whole thing? Could transmit offline via e-mail or FTP or whatever...

The manual is pretty big.  If you go to service matters, and search the Maytag Service Library under the beginning model DWU, any of the models listed are basically the same unit (pump and motor wise), the only difference will be it will not list your schematic.  The portable section should be about the same as well.

come edjucatz yerselv ;)  Usefull stuff!!

After you log onto the site, in the upper left hand corner you will see Maytag Historical Library.  Click on that, click Maytag Service Library, accept the terms, click on literature by model, enter in a model ( I would use DWU8260BBX is close to your unit) and when the screen opens hit the BOM manufacturing model that matches your unit and it will open up another screen with the service manual and any literature available for it.  This model I listed will have the same basic pump and motor assembly, the same uni-couples.  It will have a little different lower wash arm and tower system, but should suit you just fine.
