GE Gas Cooktop, Model # JGP389BEVBB

Hello:

I am working on a GE gas cook-top, Model # JGP389BEVBB, on which the RF burner will not ignite, UNLESS the aeration pan is removed.

I replaced the right side igniter and spark module because the sparking was much slower than the left side but the problem persists. The sparking is slow and ignition only occurs if the pan is removed.

I am wondering if there is polarity problem and want to know if I can switch the N and L lines at the spark module to see if it will reverse the problem. If so, I would think that proves a polarity issue. Am I wrong in considering this line of thinking or is there another test I should conduct?

In addition, you may have noted that I did not mention whether the RR burner ignites. I did not because I cannot turn the switch which I believe means the burner valve is bad.

Do the manifold and pressure regulator have to me removed from this cook-top in order to replace the valve switch? If so, is there anything I should know about removing and reinstalling either part?

Thanks,

Steve

Test the polarity at the outlet that the range is plugged into-- do not switch the power wires on the spark module.

For testing outlet polarity, I like to use one of these.  Checks GFIs, too.

Thanks,

Do you agree that this sounds like a polarity issue?

Also, any thoughts on replacing the valve?

Polarity or some kind of weird grounding problem, maybe even in the appliance itself.  More details here.  But I would eliminate the outlet as a suspect before going inside for that problem.

It looks like on this one [diagram], that you can access the burner valves via its very own access.  Schweet!
