MAYTAG WASHER MODEL #A9200

John E. Hoagland

Recommended Posts

This machine was originally completely dead.  After replacing the lid switch fuse and the check switch there was a very bad thumping noise.  A bad drive belt (looked like something had taken a bite out of it) was replaced.  Machine then appeared to be working properly.  However, at the beginning of the spin cylce there was a burning rubber smell and the machine started to thump.  The drive belt was checked and it was eaten again.  Basket and transmission can be turned fairly esily by hand from inside and by turning the pulley.  It was noticed however, that when turning main drive pulley that ther was some play in it before the it started moving the tranny.  I don't know if this is normal or not.  The motor carriage appears to slide back and forth easily without binding.  If anyone can enlighten my dark brain as to the problem I will greatly appreciate it.  Thanx.

Lots o' times, on these good ol' Maytag Dependable Care models, burned belts were caused by a towel or socks or something like that stuck between the inner basket and outer tub. Reach in from the top and feel all the way around between the two and see if there isn't a stray garment hiding there.

Incidentally, in case you need some light bedtime reading material, here's the service manual for this washer.

Also, you might have a bad tub bearing. They go bad after water has leaked on them by the main tub seal leaking.

Is it normal for there to be some play in the drive pulley before it starts to move the transmission?  Thanx for all of your help.  John
