Frigidaire Gallery GLRS267ZA Frost Proof Side by Side Refrigerator Freezer

I have a side-by-side fridge that is making a terrible whining noise for about 10 seconds every few minutes.

Cool air is blowing out the bottom (rather than warm).

Contents of freezer are melting.  Beer is getting lukewarm -- so this is an emergency!

How do I diagnose/fix this?  How do I tell whether it's a bad compressor vs. a loss in refrigerant?

Is it worth repairing?  Or should I replace it?

Waiting with a lukewarm beer,

Either a bad compressor or start relay, can change the relay to see if it solves the problem but betting on a bad compressor since this is Frigidaire...see if it is still under warranty or not...

It was manufactured 06/02.  I'm in Canada, so not sure how long it would be covered under warranty.

1) How would I find out?

2) Is the relay something I can change myself?

3) If so, where is it located?

Thanks!

the start relay is attached to the compressor, inside the lil plastic box

the model number you gave is not complete

take the complete model # (its on the tag inside the fridge section, side wall possibly the roof) and enter it here  http://www.frigidaire.com/support/manuals.asp

there you can find the part number for the start relay, also you can read the users manual that tells warranty

but in 02 i think it was 5 years on compressor

My mistake.

The complete model # is GLRS267ZAW4

The shorter model # appears on a different label on the fridge (weird, huh?)

I'll take a look for the online manual.

If the relay doesn't fix it, is the compressor a do-it-yourself repair?  Or is it a $$$professional$$$ job?

Professional job only about perhaps $300-$500 if not in warranty..would need to see if in warranty and check prices if not...

It's definitely out of warranty (second-hand fridge so no receipt).

If I were to replace it, what makes/model would you recommend?  Which ones to avoid?

Hoping for a side-by-side fridge.

Even being a second hand frig you may be able to get the sealed system repaired under warranty, (if that is the problem). They would just use the manufacture date printed on the model/serial# tag or if the actual month and year isn't on the tag the build date is coded into the serial#. Don't mention anything about it being second hand, just that you don't have your receipt and can't remember when it was purchased.

As to brands to avoid, Frigidaire or anything made by Frigidaire and G.E.

Thanks.  The date code says 06/02 so it looks like it's *just* out of warranty :-(

We'll try replacing the relay.

Cheers,

Good news!

Apparently, because this was their "flagship" model, it had a full 10 years parts & labor on the cooling system.

It turns out it was the compressor.  Now it runs like a champ.

Thanks everyone!
