I have to go fix a Maytag MAV7600AWW.  No sound when agitating but when it spins supposidly metal to metal sound.  Any suggestions prior to me going out?  How much labor is involved?  How long will it take to fix this?

start with the pump looking between the pulley and the pump base...run the machine with the belt off (no load) and listen to the motor (I replaced one 3 weeks ago that that squealed like a banshee  in spin mode...had a quite a bit of play in the shaft)..lastly turn the center pulley by hand and see if you can recreate the noise tis should give you a place to start

Thanks will look at this.

How about if it has oil dripping from somewhere< Transmission?

How much oil are we talking about here? a table spoon or a half pint?  :yikes:

If you really have that much oil in there, that aint good....transmission is leaking, but that still may not be where your scraping is coming from. Did you check all the pulleys?

Some hints I use when isolating noise problems on MAV style (PAV, CAV, any single belt 3 pulley Maytag platform).

Raise top and hold inner tub.  Start the unit in the spin mode.  You should be able to hold the tub from spinning with one finger from the starting point because of the design of the transmission.  Let it run for a bit like this.  Do you still hear the noise?  If you do, it is not the bearings or inner tub scraping anything because you are holding it from moving.  If noise is gone, suspect something wrapped around shaft(oh that's where my necklace went) or bad bearing.  Further tear down would be needed to confirm.

Isolating Motor, Transmission Pulley and Pump. You can take the belt off and run just the motor, but this is not keeping a drag on the motor so it can be misleading.  If it still makes the noise, bad motor. If not move on.  LAT (Dependable Care) 2 belt kit is your friend.  You can run a single belt to the motor and transmission pulley, or from motor to pump pulley to help you isolate the cause of the noise. Even though it is not spinning at the same speed, it puts tension on the pulley's and components and will usually draw out the noise on hard to find squeaks and squeals.

As far as loosing a pint of oil, if that is the case, your going to have a bigger problem then a little noise shortly.  The Brake is a dry brake and the only thing that hold oil is the transmission.  You can replace the lower seal for only a few bucks and 10 minutes of work, but with the amount of oil you are referring too, the transmission will probably fail shortly after.
