I read a thread the other day of problems with the gas heaters, does anyone have it?

It is concerning the pilot keeps going out.  Also, does Whirlpool techs service these units?

not sure about the thread, may the Samurai or Pegi can help with that.

As far as tech service, it all depends on how you set your contract up with Whirlpool. They send you a list of all their products and you check what you are willing to work on and those products are the only ones they call you on....or at least that's the way we have set up.

The Whirlpool FVIR (Flame Vapor Ignition Resistant) water heater(sold at Lowes stores) in question is made by American Water Heater Company and the one that is involved in a class action suit is the Flame Lock or Flame Guard.

Unfortunate for Whirlpool since they just put their name on a poorly designed product. Here is the bulletin from Whirlpool and a similar one from American Water Heater

Here is a look at the thermocouple. In the past you could replace this but they have been pulled from the shelves & an upgrade kit is shipped from the Mfr.
