Voltage testing relays?

Can you voltage test a relay?  I know about ohm checking the coil for continuity,.. but I seem to remember a way to test for voltage,...I could be wrong a friend and I are debating this idea...lol..

Thanks for the help....once again....

yes, if you know what pins and what at voltage the relay operates.

you would have to carefully apply the voltage to the relay coil terminals (on a non-installed relay) , and at the same time measure the resistance of the corresponding relay contact terminals (open or closed). A better test would be with a simulated load resistor between the tested contact terminals and the power source.

Usually in oven relays (for example), the contacts burn-up, and no longer make contact even if the relay coil were energized.

In some oven relays (for example), you could short out the corresponding terminals that would normally close when the relay was on (not the relay coil terminals).

volt test on the 2 terminals that should close

if they are closed you will get 0 volts, if they are open you will read voltage(120 or 240) depending on relay and function

first you would test the coil to make sure it is getting voltage
