Can anyone help select a tankless water heater. Ours will no longer keep the pilot light on. for 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath 2 story house, what is the right size/type? what would you recommend? what other info do i need to provide/consider to make the right choice? Thank you for your help.

Sounds as if the thermo couple is bad. Cheap fix if unit is still in good shape. Tankless heaters start at around $700 and up.

Unless space is an issue don't always  think that the tankless is better. the payoff can be like 15 years to get your moneys worth and chances are you may need a new tankless or at least need it serviced by then. They are nifty and may be the future but I never install them and don't recommend them. It does sound like you need a new thermocouple an easy and cheap repair. If you do get a new water heater dont buy from a box store like home depot, those whirlpool, GE etc..heaters are junk. For less money you can get a bradford white, ao smith or another good one from a plumbing house that won't have chronic problems.

Check out a few sites for some information on tankless and tank type water heaters

Rheem    Rinnai   Bradford White

These sites have information on sizing and benefits of both types of systems.
