Whirlpool side by side is very uncool

Whirlpool SxS, 8 years old, didn't get model number. It belongs to a coworker.

Symptoms: ice cubes melting in freezer side,  fridge side warmish. 24 hour temp range in freezer side: high of 57 low of 40.

I checked:

compressor - running right along, not unusually hot to the touch

condenser - relatively clean, they don't own pets

condenser fan motor - fine and dandy

evap fan motor - peachy

air distribution - a-ok

defrost system - top rate

Evaporator  didn't have much frost on it, but it had some, and it was about 2/3 up. Plus, it wasn't nice and COLD frost like it should be, it was more like barely cold enough to freeze type frost. There is obviously at least some freon in it.

So, I'm down to two theories

A. - just a good old fashioned sealed system leak

or

B. - oil mixed in with refrigerant causing the warmer than normal evaporator (He just moved it from the old house to the new one on July 1, and it very well may have been placed on its side during the move.)

Any thoughts on my diagnosis? If it is oil mixed in with the fridge, should he still go shopping, or would it be worth it to leave it unplugged for a few days and see if the oil drains back down?

Sounds more like a system leak - only 2/3 frosted , but may be a slug of oil in drier. If comp. was hit with a slug of oil , it usualy takes out the valves and no cooling then. Stick on a set of gauges and the truth will be known.
