Cleaned out the ducting, blower, etc.  Even with the duct disconnected the dryer runs cool.  Then I noticed the first time it is used the coils get good and hot 400° plus.  Then they click off and the thing runs cool for quite a long time.

So if I'm testing the thermostats individually, can I use an infrared gun right on the metal adjacent to the thermostats or do I need to test it another way?

check the Vent (disconnected) output temperature ...

(with the Dryer assembled)

Check for good air-flow

With an empty load, Timed Dry, High Heat, the vent temperature should cycle somewhere between 135F and 160F

Airflow is good. Temperature starts out hot, but the element cycles off, then takes a good long time to get started again.

Thanks, already got one, from Harbor Freight, like you said as it is 1/4 the price of elsewhere. I'll check it tomorrow. I'm also thinking it may be the old fabric softener left a coating on the lint screen and blocked the airflow. Because I THINK the airflow was good at times but not at others.

I'm back there on Sunday and will check it out.

Hmmmmm...

Seemed to have fixed itself in my absence. The grandmother had found it worked better on medium than on high. Given that the element was up to around 400° with long breaks. It seemed that the lower safety thermostat on the element must have been tripping at 225° (or more) than needing to cool down a good 80° or more, before the heat could kick on again.

The cycling thermostat was working fine, so it seemed, and the temperature control switch ohmed out fine. So I wonder if there was some problem with the cycling thermostat that was intermittent. It had regular cycles within the cycling thermostat's stated range on this visit.
