How can I test whether the it's the clock and its circuit board that is bad or the buttons on the front that are bad.

Right now they have to get creative with the input, as 7,8,9, and 0 don't work

Also I'm a little nervous about pulling the ribbon out. I got the two locking pins out, but how hard should I yank it?

OK, I got it.

I looked up the manual here:

http://www.servicematters.com/maytag_library/docs/16025927.pdf

Then looked on page 16 and saw how the ribbon is set up.

I pressed the "Timer" button. Then I jumped pins 4 and 5 together with it still in the holder. I got a row of 7s on the timer. So it is the pad, not the circuit board.  Could I have tested this with the current off?  Do touch pads need current to "sense" my finger and its moisture.  I could I test continuity with it disconnected?

Now, when I come to replace it, how hard can I pull on the ribbon, and is there a trick to stuffing the new one in?

clean the contacts on the ribbon with a pencil eraser, then retry, this cleans them sometimes and gets it working again
