Yesterday when I got home from work my wife said she didn't think the window AC was working because it wasn't blowing cold air. Thinking that the filter might need cleaning. When i tried to remove it was stuck so I removed the whole front plastic panel and discovered that it was frozen to the main body of the unit. There was actual ice.

I know I got my money's worth out of this unit as it is 25 years old. I just am wondering what happened to cause this.

It is an Emerson Quiet Kool.

It may just be extremely dirty. Have you ever cleaned the coils?

Need to pull the unit out and clean the evaporator coils with coil cleaner. Some dissassembly will have to be done to clean the condensor properly. You can get the cleaner from and HVAC supply store. While your there pick up a little bottle of "zoom" oil so you can oil the fan motor as well. The good thing about these old units is they were built to be able to service and built to last. The fan motor will have a small cap on each end of the motor usually facing straight up.....those will be the oil ports.

When you wash the ac cover the motor and do not let it get wet. Wait a while before you plug it back in. Let it dry good. OR plan B get some no-rinse coil cleaner. What you do is turn the ac off and clean as much of the gunk off as you can. Then follow the direction on the can. The deep foaming action of the coil cleaner will pull out all the funk. Wait 10 minutes then turn her back on. The residue from the spray will drain out the ac. Once you get it nice and clean if it continues to freeze over then you might have a bad control. To test the control dip the probe in a glass of ice water. The  compressor should shut down after 3 or 4 seconds.
