whirlpool refrig defrost problem

Hi folks, this is an older whirlpool refrig - freezer on top, mechanical controlls and no circuit boards. First call - coil completely frosted, fan working, so I put it in defrost and defrosted enough to get to the heater wiring - pulling amperage and let it work for a few minutes before helping it out with a hair dryer. When I thawed out the term. thermostat it quit heating and a few minutes later the timer brought it out of defrost. Hmm, I replaced the termination therm even though I wasn't sure it was the problem, but I wanted to try something.

A week later I get the same thing, same symptoms, same timer seeming to work, and since it's a calrod heater I thought the next likely culprit was the timer even though it's bringing itself out of defrost...so I changed it too.

A week later - same ol same ol, and I'm having wild thoughts now - could the cold control be bad and not cycling off? Could one of the parts I allready changed be bad? Could I be dealing with a haunted refrig? Could I just be having a nervous breakdown? Any ideas of what to look for next?

 Thanks yall, Cuzzin Sam

You changed the defrost terminator and the defrost timer with OEM parts? If so, then the next thing to suspect is a loose/intermittent connection somewhars. Can be very difficult to find.

What's the model number?

Was the defrost timer you removed the original or had it been replaced before?

Did someone else work on this before you got to it?

The reason I ask these questions, if you're not aware, Whirlpool uses two different defrost timer setups, (universal 8 hour 21 or 30 minute can't remember which with the flying lead that you put onto the correct terminal depending on wiring of refrig).

If it has been replace and the flying lead hasn't been put on the correct terminal then if you put it into defrost it will defrost and come out of defrost but then won't advance any longer once it is out of defrost.

If you find that the timer has been replaced as Budget Appliance Repair describes, here is the instruction sheet that will help you verify the "flying lead" wire

Sorry to be so slow with this but THANKS. The timer was running during defrost then stopping when it came out - I just assumed...well, you know. Thanks again guys, Sam
