Take a picture of evap. Is evap frosted or iced. it is possible you have an ice maker spout leaking and freezing on evap. Also check your boards for any physical damage, could be surges or bad fan motor burning out board. BTW did you manually turn on defrost heater? Also did you defrost evap completely and clear drainage tube each time you changed a part?

when you replaced the MortherBoard, did you note the Instructions:

STEP 2– ELIMINATE THERMISTOR WIRE IN PIN 2 OF J1 CONNECTOR

NOTE: This step is ONLY applicable for the following models:

ENCODER models with the following serial number prefixes:

TD2, VD2, ZD2, AF2, DF2, FF2, GF2, HF2, LF2, MF2, RF2, SF2

good catch Reg. I always remember to do this for bottom freezer models but I think i forgot to check the last encoder model i repaired. You had me scurrying to check the serial number....whew...didn't match. dodged a bullet on that one! A good scare is one of the best ways never to forget again. Thanks!

evap. is always iced up. the icemaker is not leaking, always defrost evap completely and cleared defrost drain. we also swapped the board out 2 times.

serial # begins with VH2 so it doesnt apply in this situation. how do you manually turn on defrost heater on G.E.?

thanks.

There could be a connector/wiring issue in the fridge. Energizing the heater at the board should help you trace possible problem. If no problem found then something could be damaging your boards after replacement. Usual suspects in damaging boards include fan motors, thermistors and electical current. Visually inspect board for burn spots/transistors. Check your fans for proper operation, test/replace all thermistors and advise customer to use surge protector on appliances with circuit boards or better yet, have them invest in a whole house surge protector. I keep a GE fridge at the shop just to test (and torture) it. It's a good idea to have one around when you are not certain if a board is bad or something else is going on in customer's fridge.

Is the evaporator fan motor still running when the evaporator ices up?

Those evaporator fan motors are famous for taking out good muthaboards.

depending on the first (2) characters of Fridge serial number,

original MotherBoard and Evaporator Fan (if bad) may be covered under a service bulletin

31-9071 Service Manual

  1. Evap fan still works and runs when iced up. the board didnt seem to have any burn marks. the only thing i can think of is a loose connection somewhere. thanks for the service manual. going back out to try manual defrost and check for loose connnections. will update. thanks for all the helpful advice!
