Compressor Amps

Having a debate on Compressors-What should the amp draw 1/4 hp be on a good working charged compressor? I have read that it should be 1.5 to 3 amps, is that true? With an inefficient compressor what should the amp draw be, as well as restricted and low charge. I got a case of beer riding on the bet.

A restricted system or a low charge will result in low amp draw. The comp is not working up to its potential in either application, thus, low amps. Now a low charge due to a small suction leak that has drawn in non-combustibles would result in higher then normal amp draw. As far as the running amps, I haven't paid attention to the horsepower of the domestic refrigerators I work on (Use OEM equipment only because they are under warranty, COD systems are a thing of the past), but for domestic refrigerators, correctly charged, normal ambient room temp, you will normally run under 2 amps (1.5-1.9) in cooling mode. 5-7 in defrost.
