Hi folks, on this top load whirlpool the agitator will spin but the basket doesn't. The basket is free and can be spun by hand while the agitator is spinning so I guess I'm asking what connects the basket to the shaft when it's in spin? Thanks as usual for your help, Sam

so, if the drive assembly and agitator are spinning, does that mean the clutch is bad? How does the clutch actually hook up with the basket?

The Key is the Clutch, if it is spinning and the basket drive is not then either something is jamming the tub or the drive tube is shot. The Clutch drives the basket drive - see this video:

so...do the brakes engage to spin the drum? on the unit i'm looking at the agitator shaft is spinning but the drum can be moved freely in either direction while the agitator is spinning. do i have this right in my po ol head?
