Water Heater Leaking-Premier Plus BFG6140T403NOV

Hello Everyone,

I have a water heater. It is a Premier Plus. Manufactured by the American Water Heater Co. It is about 10 years old. Today it started leaking hot water out of the relief valve on the upper right side of the heater. It was coming out at a pretty good pace then stopped. Later in the day it happened again. What are some ideas as to why this is happening?

Swapping out the tank sounds hard I would imagine getting the jacket off in one piece would be interesting.

OR if you have a expansion tank to absorb the extra water pressure from when the water is heated and expands, the expansion tank bladder is shot and waterlogged. This tank is usually only necessary on water heaters fed by city water where the city makes you have a check valve on your main supply. If you have well water or no check valve, you dont need this extra tank as the extra pressure goes back into the main supply or the well pressure tank absorbs it.

I have city water, no well. The water was coming out hot and steaming. Do you think I may just need to replace the valve then? I have a professional coming tommorow.

if it's boiling, then no, you have another problem

As stated...the valve is not the problem...the thermostat(s) are the problem.

30 bucks at the home improvement store.

Doesn't make much sense to pour $300 or more into a 10 year old tank, when a new one is $500
