Whirlpool spin cycle

I have noticed this problem with several diret drive whirlpool washers. The machine will advance to the end normally but at the spin cycle, it will pump out the water but the basket doesn't spin. During the spin cycle, I can lift the lid and the motor will stop and when I close it the basket will spin and operate normally. It doesn't do this all the time. Nothing wrong with the coupler or lid switch. What's going on?

Sounds like the second pause built into the timer is not happening, it has to pause at the end of agitate so it can set up and drain, at the end of the drain time it has to pause again for the tranny to spin, if the timer is not pausing the second time, your opening the lid is taking the place of the second pause...see if the second timer pause is missing...

I'm curious, on the whirlpool direct drives, is the spin cycle timed to pause the second time because the machines I have dealt with drain and spin at the same time unlike the GE's that work with the pressure switch. This problem is intermmitent, sometimes it will wash several loads with no problem and then sometimes it will just drain and not spin. Being a direct drive, I want to believe it's a problem with the clutch/transmission but there is still a lot I don't know. I need to take the time to study the timer cam chart but it's easier just to ask.

thanks for your patience,

This problem is like a string with two ends. There are two "ends" to this particular problem: the timer pause, as Pegi mentioned, is at one end, and the transmission neutral drain gear shift is at the other. The purpose of the timer pause is to allow the transmission to shift into neutral while the tub is being drained.

No, actually the timer pause is to allow the transmission to shift OUT of neutral after it has finished draining............
