Toilet constantly runs - please help!

Hi all, my toilet constantly runs and so I put a heavy nut over the flapper or valve (not sure what it's called), so it closes shut with each flush. Sometimes, though, it doesn't close. I would like to formally repair it. What would I need to purchase? Sorry if it's in the wrong forum - admins please move to appropriate forum, as I couldn't find one specific to the bathroom. Pictures are below.

Please help and let me know - thanks in advance!

probably just need a new flapper, go to the hardware store and buy a toilet repair kit, it has all the components in one box for 30 bucks or so
