I checked the heater, checked the bi-metal(terminator), but I'd like to know how to force the adaptive defrost control into defrost.

Thanks, it worked. I have the 18 pin chip. I tried to jump L2 to test, it didn't work. So I tried the cycle on off thermostat trick, and it worked. I'm guessing that there was a transistion period where they changed the defrost proceedure before they went to the 8 pin chip.
