Maytag MAV7600AAW spins in wash and spin cycles.

Greetings!

I am new posting here, but have browsed the forums in the past to diagnose and successfully fix issues.    This is a new one for me.

Washer: Maytag MAV7600AAW

In the was cycle, it spins instead of agitating.   The motor is running in the correct direction for wash cycle, as the pump does not drain the tub when this happens.  And it spins well - it gets going fast enough (even with full load and filled with water) that the centrifugal force brings the water up and over the sides of the tub...   oops...  :D

When I advance the timer to Spin, the tub spins in the correct direction and the washer drains normally as it should.

In both cases (either spinning when it should be agitating or when in spin cycle), when I open the lid the brake does not engage as it should - the motor cuts off and the tub spins freely at high speed until it comes to a stop on its own.

Does this sound like I need to replace some or all of the brake parts (brake lining, snubber ring, brake stator), is this a thrust washer/bearing issue (so I can just buy the drive pulley assembly that includes all the parts and swap out), or is it something else?

Many thanks for the wisdom!

~Bill

If you look closely, you may actually see it agitating while spinning. Sounds like a trans issue to me

Okay sounds like you have a brake problem. The brake has to work correctly to hold the tub for the agitation mode. When the motor goes the other way the brake is released so the tub will spin. These are great machines but they can be a beast to work on. If you do tacke it on your own be very certain you read on how to do this safely. The brake package has a spring under a lot of pressure it can hurt you if you don't do it right. Here is a link to some videos that might help you.

If the transmission were bad it would spin and agitate at the same time in the spin cycle

Usually if it were the thrust bearing it would not spin at all,

Thanks!

I had actually already found that video when I thought the brake was a possibility.

Should I get all three of the parts, or is it just the brake lining that needs replacement?

If I have time to pull it apart today or tomorrow, will there be visual wear or issues that I will see with the brake lining?

I wish there was a way to do it without pulling the whole tub out - I'll wait until I can have a spare set of hands here to help me out.

We would need more info. It is possible that the helix could get jammed in the spin position, but I have never seen that.

1 does the tub spin freely when the unit is off?

2. Does it agitate at all during spin?

Posted

1.  Yes, the tub does spin freely when the washer is off - both directions.

2.  No agitation during spin.  The agitator moves as one with the tub.

Sorry boss, on those machines you will need to pull the tub if the transmission is suspect. The video has a test you can perform to determine if the transmission is bad. You prop the machine, remove the belt, and try turning the pully wheel with your hand. Turning it counter clockwise will cause the machine to agitate but the tube should be stationary. Turning the other way should tighten everything and release the brake and the whole thing should spin including the transmission. if it does not do this check the parts at the pulley wheel if they are functioning okay it time for a tranny. Ive only had to do this job three times and its a beast. Not trying to scare you but giving you a heads up. If you can enlist help more better. good luck.

ps: make sure to take not of the special tool you will need if you have to pull it. Don't start without em.

I performed the test on the video - the machine spins completely normally - since it is empty, it was quickly able to gather up speed.   When I pushed the timer to turn it off, it coasted off slowly - it was not a quick and sudden stop like it used to be.

When the

Also, when my dad was here today, I had him hold the tub while I turned the wheel in both directions.  In spin direction, the whole tub turned.  In wash direction, my dad was able to hold the tub and he saw the agitator turn.

These seem to point more to the brake, no?

At this point, since I have the front off and the top up, I may as well pull the tub so that I can inspect the brake  since I would have to take it apart that much anyway.  I would expect to maybe see the pad worn away?

Well, thanks to your help, I think I got it!

I got everything apart today, and when I pulled the stator off, the first think I saw was that there was no liner left on the rotor at all - it was broken into pieces and sitting around it.

I'm going to order that and a snubber and replace that while I have everything apart.

The toughest part of the whole thing was getting the back spring off the tub so that I could pull it.

Many thanks again for the help!   I expect to be up and running as soon as I order and receive my parts!

Woo-hoo!  :)

All you should have to do with the brake assembly is done from the bottom of the machine , you will need a special tool to release the spring tension as mentioned in the earlier post

No special tool needed. Simply remove two opposing screws from the brake housing, replace them with screws that are longer.

Tighten them down, then remove all the rest of the short screws. At that point you can release the brake by backing out the long screws about a 1/4 inch each side until the brake is released.

There is a YouTube video on how to do it if my directions make no sense.

Thank you everyone again!

Received the parts today (brake rotor/lining & snubber ring), got them installed and the washer put back together.  Ran a test load and things seem to be all good!

So that I can give myself credit, have people name their firstborn sons after me, and have women throwing their phone numbers at me, how much did I really save by doing it myself?

I bought the parts for a touch over $60 delivered.   If any of you pros were to do this job, what would your labor cost be on a ser ice call?  It would be what, maybe 2 hrs worth?

In any case, thanks again for the help and the wealth of information on the forum here to slack-jawed amateurs like me!

I'll be lurking around...   :D
