Whirlpool washer lsq9659lw1 makes very loud, thumping DIGGA-DIGGA-DIGGA sound when it tries to stop spinning, eventually stops. Thoughts?

Sounds like the drive block is stripped

I just fixed one of these today.  Yes it probably is the drive  block.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your experience. I did replace the drive block a couple years ago, maybe its bad again. But, is it possible the drive shaft can be worn where they connect?

Get some eyeballs on the drive block and see:

Ok, I got it apart today and the drive block would not come off. Much hammering and some blood loss-no dice. Fused.

???

You mean the nut would not come loose or the block won't come off?  You can use a chisel for either one.  Cut them and break them off.  Yes the spin tube has the two points that it fits on that can be worn and not holding it from spinning.  It can also move up on the shaft so the points aren't interring the drive block and letting it slip when the brake is applied. You may have to brake it off with a hammer and a chisel.

Got the nut off, the drive block would not come off. I could see the tabs on the drive shaft are worn. When I put the tub back on (without the agitator) I could turn it and see the block turning without the shaft.

If the block is turning without the shaft, that is your problem.  The tabs are on the spin tube, not the drive shaft, just to clarify.  If the tabs on the spin tube are worn off you will need to buy a new spin tube.  You should be able to get the mounting block off if it is spinning freely.  Try a hammer and hit it from below.  If it still won't come off try some heat on the mounting block and then hit it up.  If it still won't come off you will need a hammer and a chisel to cut it off.  Being that it is loose, this does indicate that you have found the problem.  Good Luck

Can that spin tube be purchased separately? Is that the formal name of the part?

Captain Dunsel, when you help with posting links for parts please use the BIG YELLOW - APP button at the top line of the reply box, thank you.

So, with today off work (shift work) I ordered the basket drive (yesterday) and paid for overnight delivery so I could get it done today, otherwise it would be a week. Momma not happy with that option.

LONG story short - it took two hours to get the drive block off and pull the basket drive out because they were worn and disfigured. After hammering, heat, chiseling and prying I eventually I put a hack saw to the drive block opposite the open slot, cut most of the way through, then preyed in the slot until it cracked open. Then the drive tube would not pull through out the bottom for the same reason the drive block would not slide off - the tube is damaged. Could not get the hack saw in there. Much filing, sanding, hammering from the top, more filing, then pulling and twisting from the bottom, it finally came free (out). The dog was the only one around to whoop and holler with. He likes to howl.

To the front porch - new part is already here...niiiice.

New basket drive now in, the rest is easy, right? Nope. The drive shaft wouldn't slide through. It had been marred also. Fortunately just a little sanding on it and it slid into place.

Reassemble, run a cycle....SUCCESS! The dog and I howled.

Thank you to everyone on this thread and also to Appliantology, Partspro's, etc. Couldn't have done it without you all.

Peace,

Grasshopper Schlu

Good job!  I've been there done that and my hat is off to you.  I hope you get many more years of service out of that machine.  In my opinion it was worth the extra effort.  :imnotworthy:

thanks for the follow up
