WFG381LVQ1 Whirlpool Gas Oven Intermittent Ignition Problem

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a free standing Whirlpool gas range. Yesterday I noticed that after about 20 minutes waiting for it to preheat, it had never ignited. I took off the bottom panel and the burner cover and was able to observe the igniter in action. All I can say is that it's having intermittent problems. I'm pretty sure I saw a spark every time (though now I wonder if my mind is playing tricks on me), but some times that spark looked "weaker." At any rate, sometimes it would light. Sometimes it wouldn't. I did some research and it seems Whirlpool indicated there is a problem with the bake burner and released an updated burner/igniter assembly that is supposed to light more reliably. I was unable to find the actual service announcement from Whirlpool though. I'm going off what I read on forums. So, assuming the burner/igniter assembly is what I need, I'm having a hard time determining which one to get. There seem to be a few out there that all look the same to me, and I can't figure out which one is for my model. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh and I forgot to mention that the broiler seems to light reliably, and I don't have issues with the cooktop burners either. So I don't think it's the control board. (But what do I know.)

Thanks for the reply! That's really interesting. I never even considered the wiring harness. Can I ask what led you the diagnosis? Not sure what I missed. Hoping to learn.

There is a service pointer from Whirlpool that leads to possibly replacing burner, igniter and igniter wire. Also making sure there is good ground at the burner. There was a possibility of the wire being pinched or losing its power into ground.

Oh, so I need all three then (burner, igniter, and wire harness)?

Ok. Well if anyone can offer guidance on what the part number is for the updated burner and igniter assembly, I'm still not confident on that. I found the part list online (https://www.whirlpool.com/digitalassets/MLPDF/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10245785.pdf) but I can't tell if the listed part numbers are for the new or old design. I'm also confused since I've seen other posts referencing a combined burner/igniter assembly kit (as opposed to individually sourced parts).

Thanks so much for all the help so far!

I have checked your model number on Whirlpool's service pointers and nothing came up for your range. So in that case you need to start with a better diagnose, there is a flow chart to help with it and I will try to find it to help you out.

Thanks. I just checked and it looks like I need to be a "Professional Appliantologist member." Any other advice on where I can find the flowchart that could help me diagnose the issue with my oven?
