This washer is 25 years old and has been a workhorse, needing mostly minor repairs over the past 5 years - drain pump, motor coupling, etc.  I replaced the transmission about 4 years ago, but the motor is the original one.  The problem now is that water is left in the tub after the spin cycle ends and/or the clothes are still soaking wet.  Probably related are (1) The agitator column is very hard to spin manually - as you would do after adding detergent while machine is filling with water, before clothes are loaded; and (2) The washing cycle is loud with a bit of a banging noise.

Suggestions?

If it's spinning but the clothing is still too wet make sure it's draining properly. If it is you probably have a bad clutch. Check for grease in the clutch and check the wear on the clutch pads. Also check for a leaky trans, often they leak and get grease into the clutch causing it to slip.

Any grinding is usually related to clutch, trans or brake assembly.
