My 4 year old KitchenAid french door refrigerator (w/external ice and water dispenser) just stopped making ice. It will dispense water, but I know the ice tray is empty because it just kicked out the last batch of ice). I did not hear the water valve for the ice maker open like it has in the past when the dispenser is empty. Is this a relatively easy fix to do myself?

Sometimes, when the ice maker quits working, it's a early warning signal that there's something else wrong. The ice maker needs to be at 17F or below to make ice. Start with an accurate temperature measurement of the freezer compartment and let us know what that is.
