My Whirlpool dryer lgq9858lw0 hums when i press the start button but doesn't run. Thoughts?

It could be a few things. 

1- something stuck in the blower wheel/housing  

2- not getting the correct voltage to the motor

3- or simply a bad motor.

 

Does the drum turn freely by hand.

The drum does turn. I also forgot to mention that sometimes it will run, sometimes just hums without running.

sounds like a defective motor, if youve noticed a louder than normal gruntinting sound when you start the dryer, this would be a confirmation.

Ok. If the drum turns freely we can rule out anything stuck in the blower wheel/ housing. The way I test this is pretty simple. put the timer in timed dryer (or what ever cycle you want), open the door and tape the door switch close(or jump it), as you push down on the start switch manually rotate the drum clockwise. If the drum starts turning on its own you have a bad motor

good thought, NE, i would add, if the drum is turning try to put pressure on the drum mimicking a load, a weak motor will stop easily.
