Greetings! I have a Speed Queen Top Loading Washing Machine,

Model  AWN4238P111TW01

The washer agitates and drains, but does not spin.

I suspect a broken belt, but need some coaching on the best way to open up the machine, etc.

Thanks for any advice

Thank you for your reply, sh2sh2.

I now believe that the belt is not broken, but worn.

The trouble started after a very heavy load of towels (lesson learned, do no over-load to save water).

I noticed, while transferring the finished wash into the dryer, that the towels were much wetter than is typical from the Speed-Queen spin cyclle.

To test my theory, i ran a wash cycle with nothing in it, and the machine only drained, did not spin.

I discovered a "motor reset" instruction: unplugged machine for a minute, plugged back in, then lifted (and closed) the lid 6 times within 30 seconds.

Since the motor reset, the machine spins, but does not seem to spin as fast as it once did, and the clothes are left much damper at the finish.

Be sure to oil the shaft the idler pulley rides on, be sure the idler tension spring is present and working. The motor has to be removed, then the direct drive drain pump comes off of the motor before being able to change the belt... It is important to note how the belt is positioned in relation to the pump mounts and the idler pulley, or you will be wearing a FROWN when you put it back together! When the belt is off, turn the pump, the idler and the drive pulley by hand to feel for resistance... If there is a sock between the washtubs, it will cause this exact symptom and EAT all the belts you can install.

Domo, Hiroshi-san, for your reply.

I thought that my Speed Queen Model AWN423SP was belt-driven, not direct drive?

At this point, I will look for an experienced repair tech to do the job right.

The Speed Queen Top Loader has been a reliable workhorse, and I want to keep it in good working order.

I cannot figure out a way to edit my posts, apologies for my numerous updates

The correct Model number is:

AWN432SP111TW01

dyslexia  strikes again  I had written 423, s/b: 432

There is an upgrade on the spring used for the idler. It has an orange sleeve on it, instead of the black one. Might as well replace the belt too

The pump is direct drive , the transmission is belt driven . Awn432sp makes sense, I was looking everywhere for a awn423sp because I have never heard of or seen a moter reset on a speed queen .   This machine has absolutely no computer components anywhere .  After reading over this post again ,I would advise to turn the transmission by hand to be sure it spins free with nothing in it , if it does , replace the belt and give it another try, if not it could be as hiroshi says something between the tubs or something stuck in one of the holes in the inner tub.  If your machine is less than 5 years old it will have the new idler spring but they are very cheap in price so put one on just to be sure. These are the best machines on the market today . If you need to , get a professional  to fix it , there is not much on these machines that would not be worth fixing.

Again, my apologies about the incorrect model number, I was not able to find any way to edit in the correct model # AWN432SP

sh2sh2, Hiroshi, jmfister, and evaappliance, thanks so much to you all for the great advice!

To evaappliance, maybe just unplugging the machine helped me out with the spin, I am a clueless. Thanks so much for researching, and for the advice.

Last night, I started a very small load, and, although I could hear the machine agitating, the tub did not move until I gave it a little help, then the machine worked ok, although the spin is weak.

How about this plan:  I can order the parts that you all advise, then find a good repair tech to do the job right?

During the repair process, we may as well replace: the Belt, and the Idler Spring, does that sound correct?

Any recommendations for a Repair Tech near West Los Angeles, California?

Yes, no matter what you will need those parts. That will fix you up 99% of the time. If it doesn't it gets into major stuff , but that rarely happens.  If you want a second opinion on what the repairman says just post back, especially if they want to condem your washer .

Thanks so much to you all for sharing your expertise!

We bought this Machine in early 2013, so it might be just out of the 3 year warranty,

unlikely that i registered the warranty, would I need a receipt?

  • Idler pulley lever spring  OEM Part - Manufacturer #WP40061401
  •                                or
  • Idler lever spring with silencer OEM Part - Manufacturer #201189
  • Are these the correct parts for my SppedQueen AWN432SP ?
  • Which Idler Spring should I order (neither of these two on Repair Clinic has the Orange Sleeve mentioned by jmfister)

the first two numbers in the serial number are the year it was made , the second two is the month,  if that date is still in the tree year period you should not need a receipt . the belt you need is  38174  and the updated spring is 202032

Thanks for the information, evaappliance.

Serial # is 1203022624

So, no warranty for me, as the machine was made in March of 2012

Date of purchase dictates the beginning of the warranty period, not date of manufacture... If you bought it with a credit or debit card, use your bank statements to establish the date

Be careful ordering parts before having a technician come out, some servicers won't install parts that they don't provide.

yes, but if he does not have the purchase date ,or no way to get it , and it was manufactured less than three years ago  he would have been covered.    but that's off the table now .

Hello Everyone,

Thanks so much for the very helpful advice!

I did find the receipt, we bought this great SpeedQueen washer in April 2012, good idea to research in case warranty coverage still applied.

I have not yet searched for a good repair tech, but will ask a couple of neighbors for referrals.

The reason that I had wanted to pre-order parts was two-fold:

  • 1. to save time, since I want those parts replaced for preventative maintenance, and I want the best parts available, not a cheap substitute. Maybe appliance parts are not as difficult to select as plumbing parts, however:
  •
  • 2. The last time I had a Plumber install a kitchen sink, I did not specify Kohler drain fittings (to go with the Kohler sink), and the bloke went parts shopping, and got a drain coupling that is a type I hate. I had assumed that the plumber would know to choose the correct part, but no!  I later learned that the Kohler Sinks absolutely should have the Kohler drain fittings, as they are designed to fit that sink perfectly. Not a surprise that a few months later, I had to have that same plumber fix a leak from the poorly designed part that he selected. But, I digress ..

To sum it up, I like to keep these repair folks on a short leash, because I have been burned a few times by "free-thinkeing" plumbers who do not ask, and then we have the fait accompli.
