My washer will not agitate. It fried the belt. I bought new belts and it worked for a couple of cycles.

Now it is starting to eat the new belt. I have them adjusted as far as I can go.

After searching your site it seems the transmission is bad. I can turn it in the spin direction but very difficult to spin in the agitate direction. It is supposed to turn both directions easily, correct?

I want to remove the transmission and open it up and see if there is any internal problem and/or replace the trans.

I am looking for the correct spanner wrench to accomplish this. Do you have the part or part number for the wrench?

thx

david

p.s. is there anything inside the trans that is causing my problem?

AARDL, thx for the reply.

Says not available. Local parts house said same thing.

Played with it some more today.

Is it possible the brake is causing my problem?

Posted

I laid the unit on its back and opened the trans.

Everything looks perfect.

Opened up the brake and it had oil in it.

Cleaned out the oil and reassembled.

Same problem. No agitation but it spins fine.

Any ideas?

The brake is supposed to have oil, the top shaft is most likely seized into the case

sh2sh2,

thx for the reply.

I will check that out.

Any way I can free it up aside from replaceing the trans assembly?

thx

Agreed !       You can disassemble the transmission and free up the top shaft , but that job is not for the faint of heart !!

This one has the new orbital transmission, not really that bad of a job.  You don't even have to remove the transmission to work on it.   Will still have to remove the spanner nut and tub to get agitator shaft out.

Thx for the replies.

Found another washer with the same trans for almost nothing. (case of beer)

Same trans. But it doesn't spin.

I will make one good washer out of two.

Liquid detergent is corroding the trans shaft sleeve and causing it to swell until it begins "grabbing" the trans shaft...these venerable old Maytags can be fixed, however. If you want to do the job with total certainty, remove the shaft and hone the sleeve slightly to free up the shaft OR you can literally put trans fluid on the shaft and flip the entire machine upside-down and let it spin for a couple of hours to let the shaft hone the sleeve the lazier way... Smoking belts during agitate have been fixed all over Chicagoland by this method, I have actual footage of a Maytag spinning while turned over... I cannot find the file to upload for your enjoyment, or I surely would. If you make a Frankenstein transmission, switch to Powdered Detergent to protect your hard work!

Part number: 22038313

Part number: 22038313

Hope this helps

Part number TB123A, which is available, worked on my washer.

Got it apart and cleaned the shaft. Now it agitates.

But wouldn't spin. Found out I had the top of the inner tub too low and it was binding the inner tub.

Corrected that now it won't agitate. The tub turns while in the agitate direction.

I will work on it today. I think I may have the pulley dog or pawl installed incorrectly to lock the brake when calling for agitate.

Should say top of outer tub too low and binding the inner tub.

Got it. Adjusted the dog or pawl so the brake would apply.

Works now. Agitates  and spins.

Thx for the help.

Is it possible to run test cycles without water hooked to it?

Picked up the other washer and I want to test it.

thx

Yes, disconnect the level pressure switch tube from the outer washtub and apply the pressure to satisfy the switch with your mouth and it will agitate with no water in it. You could also test it outside by filling it with a garden hose, then spin/draining it onto the ground...

Thank you.

I have been testing mine in the garage with a hose connected to the fill valve.

I now have the cleanest garage floor in town.
