tried to fix Amana Fridge

If the condensor fan motor is running- the compressor should be running, as these are fed from the same power. If the fan shuts off at the the same time the compressor does, than you have a control issue. If the fan continues to run and the compressor stalls- you have either a compressor or a start device issue. I suggest taken the start device and using a "cheater cord" to directly plug in the start device to working power source. You may have a failed or failing start device OR a bad compressor. It does no harm to test run the compressor by itself and is simple to do. This quickly determines if it is a comressor/starting issue or a control issue.

I didn't look up model, but it is likely a Tecumseh compressor and those have hgh fail rate. Also, fair warning- never use a 3-in-1 (hard start) device on any refrigerator that uses an ADC. In particular I have seen the Amana style board be particular prone to burning if a hard start is used....

Got any recommendations on good fridges with known good components?  I am looking at LG and Samsung ones.

Whatever you buy there are more electronic on them, so think of it as a computer there are and if you have a computer that is hook up to the electrical grid  buy a surge protector that plugs into the outlet. May save your ass one day.

there are no ( good ones ) anymore , but the two you are considering are just a touch better than the ge , my opinion for the less of the evils is cheaper frigidaires.  yes they stink but just not as bad !
