Chef wall oven p/n41023 trips circuit breaker, burning smell

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my chef wall oven  p/n41023. It is very old, around 20 years.

So when I turn on the oven and it will start to heat up and work for a couple of minutes. Then I will hear a small boom noise come from the oven and the fuse box will trip. There will also be a burning smell coming from the oven.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Will

Gas or Electric? The model number is indispensible on these repair topics, this is a Magic Chef?

It is electric. It is an Australian brand called Chef. I've searched for the manual online, but no luck. I think the model number is P/N41023 but haven't found anything from the Chef website either.

Have you checked the amp draw when it is tripping the breaker? Have you tried disconnecting the elements and see if it still does the boom trip thing? Where in the oven is the boom coming from?  Has it worked in that location before? I ask because Australian power frequency is 50hz and I could not find any info on them being sold in America.

It says: For all queries quote I.D. number, wiring diagram etc., See outer L.H. side panel. 240V 50hz AC only

Sorry should have made it clear that I live in Australia and we've had this oven in our home for 20 years or so. Haven't had any luck elsewhere so I signed up here!

I've replaced the heating element last week but it still had the same problem.  Not sure where the boom sound is coming from. I will have check that next.

An old trick to find arcing is to expose what parts you suspect, then do your test IN THE DARK. I find floating neutrals in load centers that way from time to time, just shut off the lights and ask the customer to repeat the failure, if possible.
