I have a Whirlpool Washer model number WTW4950XW2 which is leaking water from above the gearcase.

I'm trying to remove the inner tub so I can remove the gearcase and replace the washer's main tub seal,

I've removed the tub ring, wash plate, and spanner nut, but I can't lift the tub out.

Do I also have to remove the hub assembly before the inner tub can be removed?

And if so, how do I remove the hub assembly?

Thanks

YES. Remove six (6) screws from basket driven hub. IMPORTANT: Remove the screws slowly if using a powered screwdriver. Hold up on basket while removing the last two (2) screws to avoid stripping out threads.

Remove driven hub and drive block. NOTE: When driven hub is removed, basket will drop slightly. Basket and drive assembly can be replaced at this time if needed. Follow all Instructions that may come with the new basket or drive assembly

Tried to upload the images from the Job-Aid, but the file was too large...

Hi Hiroshi,

I removed the hub assembly and drive block, but the tub still will not lift out.

If I rotate the tub back and forth, the gearcase's shaft rotates with it.

I tried to remove the gearcase without removing the inner tub, but after taking out the four bolts which hold the gearcase in place, the unit only drops around a half inch and will not come out.

Any more suggestions?

They can really be hard to remove. 2 people can make me t easier. Or if you google cabrio tub removal there is a video that shows how to use a scissor jack and a 2x4. It works great for me.

Hi johntech and Hiroshi

I removed the gearcase's four mounting bolts, and used the 2x4 / scissor jack procedure to push the gearcase down and out of the tub.

I cut a 2x4 to 20'' in length. Put a block of wood atop the gearcase's shaft. Mounted the scissor jack atop the block of wood. Set the 2x4 on top of the jack, and cranked it.

It worked :D

I removed the mounting bolts from the gearcase and pushed it down using the scissor jack method because I was afraid of breaking the washer's balance ring if I applied too much pressure trying to lift the tub up with the gearcase still mounted.

I appreciate you guys help.

Thanks a lot

I use a thin glaze of molykote on the threads of the new part to avoid them seizing again... on the off chance the machine makes it to a second main seal repair...

Hi Hiroshi,

I only replaced the washer's main tub seal, and everything is working fine.

I was able to get a replacement seal without the additional hardware.

No more leaking.

Thanks
