GE Monogram Freezer Leaking

Recommended Posts

GE Monogram ZISS420nmcs, side by side cabinet depth unit.  condenser is in the "ceiling" of the freezer compartment. Water is leaking, and freezing, from the ceiling of the freezer. Started making a terrible noise (fan was hitting the ice). I have removed all screws but cannot seem to remove the ceiling panel.  There is a small opening, I can reach in and feel ice above the ceiling. I suppose I can fix the symptom by letting all of the ice melt and simply turning off the water to the ice maker. Any better suggestions?  TIA !!

I'm not familiar with these units but my research found that the evaporator drain freezes on theses causing the issue you described.

They made a kit to help address this and I heard it's not an easy job to install???

Part number: WR49X10021

The above mentioned kit will fix that problem. It's a pretty common issue.

Defrost it the night before. It will make taking everything a part much easier.

Its not a fun job to do. Just take your time and read the directions.

I'd like to add to this discussion. I've been fighting a 42" ZIS refrigerator for years, I think it is finally tamed. I learned about the kit, and ordered and installed it, much better at first, but slowly the ice was gaining on me. I started hearing the telltale tick for the circulating fan at start, after a defrost, caused by a bit of ice interfering with the blade. Not anywhere near as bad as before, but still some cause for concern. My solution; a  Supco UET 120 electronic defrost timer, set to 4 hours interval, and 10 min, duration. Now the catch pan under the compressor is usually damp, and it just sounds right. I'm sure that puts the energy star stuff out to pasture, but I'd pay a few bucks a year to not have to keep this fridge in my plans continuously.  Just hoping this puts someone else in a better place.

I use the Supco EDT11 (when I need to control duration and frequency).

I looked into both, ( Supco EDT11 & 120) looks like either one would work. Since this was my first adventure with a solid state timer I guess I was content to just dip a toe in. If this one goes bad, I'll likely use the EDT11, over 2 times the price, but neither will break the bank, and hopefully those extra dollars buy some quality and durability.

BTW the terminal markings indicated that 1 & 3 terminals were reversed from the previous timer, I made some jumpers to correct that, and it wouldn't run at all. I then just plugged it up direct, and it worked fine.
