Whirlpool washer must be restarted after lid is opened

I recently replaced the timer (Part #WP8557301) on a Whirlpool washer Model #LSB6300PW2.  Now when I open and then close the lid during any cycle (fill, wash, etc.), the cycle will not resume without pushing the timer knob in and out again.  With the former timer, the cycle would resume as soon as the lid was closed.  Is this new timer defective or has Whirlpool changed the design as an added safety feature?  I contacted Whirlpool directly, and they just referred me to Owner's manual.

You may be pushing the timer knob in with the lid when you open it?

Not touching the timer knob when opening or closing the lid.

Try bypassing (jumping) the lid switch and see if it still does it.

Quick is on the trail there... I would take a hard look at the lid switch, the one used on this model has two common problems:

1. The "S" shaped hinge may not be decisively actuating the switch and contributing to your symptom.

2. The neutral connection in the molex connector starts going bad and causes intermittent operation, eventually melting the switch terminal and molex.

The machine should not require the knob to be pushed and pulled to continue the cycle. (whirlpool tech- line has never even held a wrench as far as I can tell...)

Thanks. I'll try checking the lid switch.  I bypassed a lid switch for another customer after an Amonzon sold (so called Whirlpool) switch failed after a few loads of laundry. She didn't care about the safety feature of the lid switch. She may change her mind when her toddler gets older.

And just how would you feel if someone gets hurt on that machine?

This is a major no-no in my eyes.

It is also important not to leave incorrect repairs in your wake because anyone who comes along behind you may torpedo you as a repairman, blaming any new problem on the obvious work-around. My uncle used to call this "Pinning the TALE on the Donkey." Protecting your reputation and being aware of all liabilities is key...
