We have a Hotpoint LP gas oven that comes on, heats up but won't stay at temp. It heats to 325 when set on 350 (which I could live with) but goes down to around 220, the burner ignites again but only stays on until it reaches 250 then goes out again. Never does get back up to 350.  I have to turn it off and back on, it goes into preheat mode and the whole thing starts again.  Tested the sensor (tested 1086 OHMs) and the igniter checked out, glowing orange for 1 min 42 seconds before it lit and stayed on during preheat. Any idea of which part needs replaced? None of the FAQ's addressed this exact problem.

An igniter that takes 1 minute and 42 seconds checks out? According to who? If the igniter takes that long to open the valve it is waaaaay out of threshold.

Replace the igniter and test again!

Thank you! a local repairman told use that three minutes and under was normal for the ignitor. Would this cause it to shut off before reaching 350?

Not usually, but 3 minutes is much too long, a new igniter will light the burner in less than 30 seconds in most cases. You need to fix the obvious problem one at a time and then move to the next variable.

Failing igniters tend to make customers believe the machine is not getting hot enough, so fix that and re-test.

Agreed Ignitor problem.

Your oven cycles on and off to maintain the set temp as an average.

Set to 350: it'll heat up to 375 shut off until it gets to 325 then comes back on. This cycle continues...

a weak Ignitor won't kick the oven back on at 325 like it's supposed to and temp drops all the way to 220...

A brand new ignitor will usually always open the valve and light the burner in 25-30 seconds.

A good ignitor should always light the burner in under 1 minute - (about 45 seconds is average and can be considered as no problem).

Anytime an ignitor is taking more than a minute to light the burner it is on it's down hill leg and will only get worse and take longer the more it's used.
