Frigidaire PLFU1778ES2 Freezer - low side high pressure

Recommended Posts

2006 Frigidaire freezer quit freezing.

Relay did NOT rattle...replaced with 3 in 1 start kit nonetheless. No change in compressor function.

No continuity or ground between bare metal of compressor case and any of the compressor pins.

Resistance between condenser pins:  Red hot to Wh neutral = 16  /  Red hot to Bk common = 8  /  Wh neutral to Bk common = 12

Compressor top heats up after 8-10 minutes of on-off operations described above.

Compressor Red hot lead reads 14 amp draw when compressor is running...fans running at the same time.

Evap and condenser fans both run strong.

Evap fins and condenser coils all clean.

Can't keep compressor running long enough to read frost patterns on evaporator fins/coils.

I suspected low refrigerant might be causing lack of freezer cooling and also the lack of cooling at top of compressor.

Installed SUPCO BPV31 piercing valve on low side line to read pressure and potentially add R134a

Attached a single line hose from SUPCO valve to pressure gauge and an untapped can of R134a to close off that end of the line.

Was expecting a 0 or negative psi on the low side consistent with low refrigerant...not so.....

The guage is reading 45psi on the low side of the compressor!!!

Novice homeowner repairman... could use some ideas, suggestions.  I don't currently have multigauge manifold setup.

Also...... Compressor runs for 8-10 seconds then kicks off for a minute, then back on for 8-10 secs... top of compressor starts getting hot after 5 minutes of so of this on/off operation. Compressor label reads as follows:   Embraco EGU 85HLP (Thermally Protected), 17.5 LRA  /  R134a  /  1ph  /  No start without starting device

The rule of thumb is that two of those compressor pin ohm readings should equal the third reading, 8+12 does not equal 18 ...

I am of the opinion that the compressor is a goner.

Why use a 3 in 1 start kit, if you have to use one of those on a compressor then its time for a new compressor. Those things should be things of the past.

Thanks rbmappltech. Thought relay might be bad. Had a 3 in 1 handy. With 45psi on LOW SIDE and compressor drawing 14amps... is it a bad compressor, an obstruction in the line or something else?
