Whirlpool top loader is agitating, but skipping rinse and spin. The knob advances, you can hear the timer ticking, and when the timer hits the mark, you hear the switch click...something may or may not happen for a few seconds at or during rinse cycle.  No spin.  But I can turn the knob to rinse and it will rinse (but not spin).  And I can turn the knob to spin, and it will drain and spin.  But these things do not happen in the normal operation of the machine.  It has been occasionally skipping the spin cycle for a little over a year, but as of Friday, it's consistent and today it began to skip rinse as well....it just drains, and then nothing.  No engine noises, just timer clicking and what I assume was the washer draining.

If it helps to know, this washer is on it's second lid switch (not bad for seventeen years and two kids), and has had the coupler replaced in the last three years.  I know it's old, but would prefer to fix if possible.

If it is draining, then the motor is working. You should watch it operate with the cabinet removed so you can see what is and is not happening...

I agree, you should fix it! These are the most serviceable washers ever conceived of by mankind.

Read some about the operation of this washer online. Noticed all of the other cycles on the machine ran through correctly. The one that doesn't was the one we use the most. Long story short, replacing the timer fixed the machine.
