Hi,

I have a Whirlpool dryer drive motor part number 279827 which has a broken start winding.

One of the four places where the two retracting springs mount has broken and the spring fell off, so the start winding will not retract as designed.

I have a bad 279827 motor laying around and I wanted to know if anyone has ever replaced the start winding on one of these motors.

Thanks

Those are the counter-balance weights and springs- the start winding is the copper wire wrapped tightly around the center of the motor (there is a run winding too), but the motor will hum and not start if the centrifugal switch doesn't retract when the RPM's drop.

You can cut a new notch in the pot metal weight and re-attach the spring, but you have to do it just right for the motor to work well again...

If the start winding is actually broken- there would be no point in re-attaching the springs. Do Not leave the machine on "WrinkleGuard" as this causes the motor to stop and start a ton of extra times and saws through the mounting tabs for the weights.

Thanks Hiroshi.

Now I just have to find a small enough tool to do the job.

I appreciate it.

Take care
